Meebo window construction has become dog slow

Postby austinfx on Wed Sep 13, 2006 3:31 pm

I only started seeing this several days ago, and it has slightly improved in the past day, but when I log into Meebo, sometimes it takes 30 seconds for a chat window to fully create itself, while it loads images/pieces of the window. It appears I can chat while I do this, but it looks realllllly ugly and broken.

I'm using www15 on a speedy laptop right now. It took 15-20 seconds or so for a new chat window to draw (I tested it a few times). I've had the same behavior on my work computer (both Windows XP Pro), but I don't know what the server name was.

I hope this helps! Meebo is too rad for this to totally get me down ;)

austinfx,

can you try a higher number server (ie. www25) or wwwm.meebo.com and see if you see any improvement in rendering?

thanks,

It seems to be an issue with how fast it can load the GIFs that are used in the UI. Every window seems to be loading ~30 images, and I can watch them count down to 15, at which point it seems to hang on the 15th image (/skin/default/img/aim_logo_small.gif).

The speed seemed to be inconsistant. www4 was slow ( 15 seconds ) www30 was fast ( 5 seconds ), wwwm was fast, but then www5 was also fast. I'm not sure how much it's caching the images though between changing servers.

One thing I've noticed is that I download the most images the first time I open a window from a different chat provider (AIM vs Yahoo vs MSN). Then, after that, it goes down to 18 images. But it always stops on the 15th.

This is IE 6.0.2900, by the way.

Well, I've since tested this on my laptop and desktop, and lo -- windows are fast again. Really fast.

Oh wait. No. Scratch that.. It's Sunday night, and it takes up to 10 seconds for a window to draw. I bet your servers are getting hit something fierce right now.

austinfx,

interesting. it seems you're having some intermittent issues. First of all, where are you located, and wihch browser are you using? Also, next time the problem happens can you try one of the IP addresses of our servers?

thanks!
